The Leaders

Mary has lived on Hayling Island for all of her life, and has been leading The Bridge Church alongside her husband Paul for more years than she can remember! She is the youngest member of a large family of 9 children.

Having thoroughly enjoyed bringing up her own 3 children who are now adults, Mary also now loves spending time with her family & 9 grandchildren (which  includes twins!) and has enjoyed several trips to Sydney, Australia to visit her daughter, son-in-law & her 3 grandchildren who  live there.

She has also enjoyed a rich variety of activities throughout her Christian ministry. Mary was a volunteer for Home Start for 9-10 years, an organisation which helps families in stressful situations, and was Chaplain to the Mayor of  the local council in the Borough of Havant during the late 90s - the first woman to take on this role. Mary loves writing - from newsletters, short dramas & sketches for the local church, to talks for a wider variety of audiences/congregations. She has also had a book of her poetry & the stories which inspired them published called ‘Band of Hope & Glory.’

Mary feels passionately about promoting Christianity as a life to be lived to the full in the way that Jesus intended, and loves to use humour in her communication & writing, since she believes the accusation that Christians are often quite justified! There is nothing Mary likes more than teaching on a revelation from God’s word and applying its relevance to our everyday lives in the 21st century.

Mary enjoys cooking and loves using their home for hospitality, whilst Paul has a special passion for puddings and anything that involves custard!

She is grateful for all the spiritual foundations that were laid as a child growing up in a Christian family, and for the training she received through the Pioneer network of churches; for the people who believed in her and promoted her to take on the privilege of leading & serving the wonderful people of Hayling Island, whilst living in such a beautiful place.

Paul has been married to Mary for over 40 years,

He has been involved in leadership of local church since the age of 25. This has combined with a career as a School Teacher from which he has now retired. Working as a Head of Sixth Form, Head of Year, involved academic and vocational guidance as well as pastoral support.

This background has been a valuable asset to enable Paul in his current work in the church and in the community through ‘The Bridge Advice Centre’.

Alongside this, Paul loves helping the church to understand the ‘Big Story’ that runs throughout the Bible. He teaches and preaches on the relevance of knowing God in our everyday lives by appreciating His love and commitment to us through all history as recorded in the writings of the Old Testament prophets, New Testament Gospels and Apostolic letters to the various churches.

Paul devised a course called ‘Bible for Beginners’ to help cultivate an interest in & bring understanding of God’s word to those not yet part of the church. Several years ago this ran as a night school class and was featured on BBC Radio Solent.

In serving the local community, Paul is a Governor at The Hayling College and as part of Churches Together organises the Men’s Breakfast at The Bridge Centre, which has a rich variety of speakers each month.

Paul also loves to find gaps occasionally to sail to places such as Easthead in our beautiful Chichester Harbour and play golf occasionally at Tournebury Golf Course.
